Restaurant: 20% is the widely cited standard for good service.
Pre-tax is the etiquette standard — tipping on the taxed total usually adds 8–10% to your tip by accident.

Frequently asked questions
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
The etiquette standard is the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total typically inflates your tip by 8–10% without any extra going to better service. Toggle between the two above to see the exact difference on your bill.
What is a good tip percentage for restaurants?
18–20% is the widely cited standard for full-service restaurants in the US — 15% for adequate service, 20% for good service, 20–25% for exceptional service. Bars run a little lower at around 15–18%, or $1–2 per drink.
How do you split tax and tip fairly between people?
Divide them proportionally: each person's share of tax and tip should match their share of the subtotal. Even splits only feel fair when everyone ordered roughly the same. Use the By Item tab above — it does the proportional math and reconciles every cent.
Should you tip on takeout or counter pickup?
It's optional — counter-service tipping is one of the most debated norms in 2026. Tipping 0–10% for a simple pickup is widely considered acceptable; tip more if the order was large or complicated.
What if the bill already includes a service charge?
A service charge — sometimes listed as an auto-gratuity — is the tip in most cases. Don't double-tip by accident: enter it in the service-charge field and this calculator removes it from the tip base automatically.
What is a tip estimator?
A tip estimator is another name for a tip calculator — a tool that estimates your tip, tax, and total from the bill. This page is both: enter the bill, pick a percentage, and it estimates everything instantly, including each person's share.
How much should you tip delivery drivers?
15–20% of the food subtotal with a $3–$5 minimum, plus $1–$2 per mile on longer drives and extra for bad weather. Always tip on the subtotal — delivery fees and taxes go to the platform, not the driver. Try the dedicated delivery tip calculator.
